Individual Volunteer Opportunities

Individual Volunteer Requirements and Process

By volunteering you can make a difference in the lives of animals, and in your community. Whether it is cleaning kennels or participating in events, we have something for everyone! We have volunteer opportunities in the following areas:

By volunteering you:

  • - Acquire valuable experience and knowledge
  • - Gain useful skills for personal and professional development
  • - Learn about animal welfare, issues, and how to make changes happen in your community
  • - Help increase the adoptability of animals and find their new forever homes
  • - Become involved with your community
  • - Get as many critter cuddles as you want!

To be a volunteer with the Saskatoon SPCA, there are a few requirements:

  • - You must be 16 or older. If you are under 16 and in need of volunteer hours, please check our Student Volunteer Program. Volunteers under 16 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
  • - Determine how much time you can give. Volunteers will be asked to commit to a minimum of six months of service. Most positions may require a weekly commitment of 1-2 hours.
  • - A love for animals and a genuine concern for their welfare and well-being is a must!

Once your application is selected:

  • - The Volunteer Coordinator will schedule a personal interview with you to determine an appropriate volunteer placement
  • - A Criminal Record Check will be required once placement is decided.
  • - Attend an orientation and/or training session related to your volunteer placement. Volunteer Placements working directly with dogs or cats may require additional training on canine and feline body language and safe animal handling skills before becoming an active volunteer. The Volunteer Coordinator will contact you to schedule your training sessions.

Please note: Some positions require a start up cost (i.e. Dog Walking and Training volunteers will be required to pay a fee to apply).
