Surrendering your Pet
The SPCA very much relies on donations to help offset the cost to care for unwanted and stray animals. Therefore, The SPCA appreciates when the person surrendering a pet pays a $40.00 surrender fee to help with the costs of housing, feeding, caring for - and sadly, sometimes euthanizing - the surrendered pet.
When you surrender your pet to the SPCA, you must realize that we cannot provide you with information on what happens to your animal. Please try every means possible to find your animal a home. Some other alternatives are putting an ad in the paper, putting up notices in vet offices or pet stores, or putting an ad on the internet.
When a person surrenders their pet to the SPCA,
they must fill out an Animal Profile form. This information will
help the SPCA match the animal with an appropriate new owner.
Essential information includes:
• the age and sex of the animal
• whether it is neutered or spayed
• where the animal was kept during the day, and during the
night
• whether the dog had obedience training
• if the animal is housebroken
• the animal’s personality: friendly, reserved, playful,
eager, etc.
• how the animal reacts to strangers
• any special needs the animal has
• whether the animal has lived with other animals
As well, the person surrendering a pet is required to sign the
SPCA Surrender Conditions, which read:
- I hereby give the Saskatoon Society for the Prevention of
Cruelty to Animals Inc. full permission to either euthanize
(put to sleep) or adopt out this animal(s) of which I have custody.
- I acknowledge I am giving up all my rights, including custody,
to said animal. It is understood that the Saskatoon Society
for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals makes no guarantees
on the adoption of said animal.
- Due to space limitations, health reasons, and animal temperament,
sometimes it is difficult to find homes for all the animals
in the shelter.
- I hereby agree to the terms and agreements of this policy.
I understand that I am giving up all rights to this animal,
and it may be euthanized at any time unless other arrangements
have been made for adoption.
No pet will be turned away.
