Adoption Representative – Job Description


The Saskatoon SPCA is particularly interested in applicants who have previous experience in animal husbandry, and experience in customer relations.  Some knowledge in recognizing different breeds of dogs and cats, as well as various different species of exotic animals including basic care requirements would be beneficial.  Further, it would be an asset to be familiar with the City of Saskatoon Animal Control Bylaws and the Animal Protection Act of Saskatchewan. 

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Minimum of Grade 12
  • Possession of a valid Saskatchewan Driver’s License
  • Must be able to work with other staff, volunteers, and the public in a positive, practical manner and be able to work with minimum supervision
  • Previous kennel or animal care experience will be considered an asset
  • Must possess good verbal and written communication skills
  • Must have a genuine interest in and concern for the overall well-being of animals and demonstrate empathy and compassion for Shelter animals
  • Position is physically demanding, including heavy lifting, pushing and pulling which would require an individual with ability to maintain a level of fitness and endurance to fulfill the required duties


Nature of Work:

Reporting to Shelter Management, the Adoption Representative performs duties to ensure quality care and treatment of all SPCA animals.

Responsible for:

  • all cleaning duties in the Dog Kennels, Cat Rooms, Exotics Room, and other designated locations such as animals housed in the Health Wing and Pound area
  • the feeding of all animals in these areas, and for monitoring the health and behavior of animals
  • assisting in performing duties for the Promotion of all Fundraising activities and will therefore be familiar with upcoming events and on-going efforts to promote the SPCA.  This includes the promotion of lottery tickets, fundraising events, and merchandise sales.


Duties Include, But Are Not Limited to:

  • Daily cleaning of all cages, litter pans, food dishes and rooms per assigned work routine;
  • Feeding and watering of all animals in your assigned area, per assigned work routine;
  • Weekly and monthly cleaning duties in accordance with prescribed work routine and assigned cleaning schedules;
  • Pressure washing cages in between new occupants or as required / assigned;
  • Garbage removal as required (at least once daily);
  • Responsible for grooming and socializing as time permits;
  • Take dogs outside for exercise, and to urinate/defecate as required;
  • Assisting the public with viewing of animals available for adoption with the intent of finding the best possible home for each animal, taking its individual needs in to account at all times;
  • Regular checking of all animals in your assigned area for health problems and reporting any health concerns to the Administrative Animal Care Attendant, or designate on duty;
  • May perform animal care duties, such as nail clipping and bathing as required;
  • Regular checking of all water dishes throughout the day and replenishing water immediately prior to the end of each shift and ensure bedding is clean and dry;
  • Providing proper training, guidance and instruction to volunteers who frequently offer their assistance;
  • Adhering to the guidelines provided in the kennel guidelines manual, health wing protocols, and behavior assessment program;
  • Responsible for the daily cleaning of all Kennel floors (hallway, Food Prep., Laundry, Maintenance);
  • Responsible for the cleanliness of all walls and doors in the Kennel areas;
  • Reporting any signage that is needed or needs to be replaced;
  • Responsible for checking supplies of food, litter, miscellaneous items and notifying Shelter Management, when products are low, and need to be reordered;
  • Daily laundry duties, dishes and putting away accordingly;
  • Cleaning and disinfecting of cat carriers, cages, exotic cages;
  • Reporting and recording all maintenance needs or repairs as required;
  • Orientate and oversee volunteers and work education students assigned to the Adoption Wing;
  • Report any concerns regarding volunteers and work education students to the Volunteer and Public Relations Coordinator;
  • Monitor the public for touching of all animals, removal of animals from cages/kennels, and hand - washing, etc.;
  • Transport of animals from the Kennels/Cat Rooms to the front office area, or to our outdoor exercise areas for prospective adopters;
  • Assist in the adoption selection process by providing information regarding specific animals to prospective adopters;
  • Ensure that all kennel wing exit doors are locked at shift-end, checking that maintenance exit doorway is clear of debris or carts, turning off all lights in the Kennel area, making sure all doors are closed and that the dryer is turned off;
  • Responsible for performing duties in a professional, proactive manner in order to achieve and maintain high quality care of all SPCA animals, and providing excellent customer service to the public;
  • Adhere to guidelines established in Shelter Policy & Procedure Manual, including the reporting of any abuse or other unacceptable treatment of animals;
  • Regular participation in staff meetings to share ideas and suggestions to improve animal care services;
  • Must use discretion and good judgment at all times to ensure the good reputation of the Society;
  • Must be familiar with and supportive of the goals and mission of the Saskatoon SPCA;
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Shelter Management.
