Tiny Tails - A Journey to Good Manners and Happy Tails!

Welcome to Tiny Tails at the Saskatoon SPCA, your first step towards fostering a lifelong friendship with your puppy. Over six enriching weeks, our CPDT-certified trainers will introduce you and your puppy to the world of foundational training and socialization, using positive reinforcement to encourage good behavior and companionship.

Who Should Join? This class is perfect for puppies between the ages of 8 weeks and 5 months, aiming to build a strong foundation of obedience and behavior management through love and understanding.

What You Need:

  • Buckle/Clip Collar (non-tightening)
  • 4-6 foot leash (leather or nylon)
  • A variety of small, tasty treats
  • Treat Pouch (optional)
  • 2-3 of your puppy’s favourite toys
  • A mat, blanket, or dog bed

Curriculum Overview:

  • Week 1: Getting Started Introduction to basic obedience and puppy parenting tips, including house training techniques and the essentials of collar handling and chin rest. Activities focus on developing positive associations and basic puppy manners like attention, hand touch, and the foundational steps of recall and sit training.
  • Week 2: Building on the Basics Review of week 1 lessons, advanced tips on managing jumping up, health and handling with a focus on chin rest for stranger approaches, and enhancing basic puppy manners by introducing distractions to "Watch Me" and starting "1-2-3" pattern games for loose leash walking.
  • Week 3: Beyond the Basics Focus on chewing management, the importance of proper health and handling techniques including brushing and nail care, and advancing puppy manners with activities like restrained recalls and placing training.
  • Week 4: Deepening the Connection Addressing puppy mouthing, vet prep work, and introducing more complex commands like "stay" with variations in duration, distance, and distractions. We'll also explore more advanced loose leash walking techniques and recall strategies.
  • Week 5: Advanced Commands and Enrichment Tackling counter surfing, stranger handling, and enrichment activities like "Leave It," building on "Place" and "Stay," and introducing cavalettis/tunnel activities to challenge and engage your puppy further.
  • Week 6: Celebration and Forward Look A review of all the skills learned, culminating in graduation ceremonies with fun games like Relay Race and Recall Races, and handing out graduation certificates to celebrate the achievements of our furry students and their dedicated parents.
